Audio Play
Jatugriha
Synopsis
“Jatugriha” is an audio play penned by Bratya Basu, inspired by the “Jatugriha Upa-parva” from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. The story revolves around the treacherous scheme orchestrated by Duryodhana, who assigned Purochana the sinister task of constructing a lac house (Jatugriha) in Varanavata. Duryodhana’s intent was to eliminate the Pandavas by luring them into the rigged structure. However, Vidura, possessing knowledge of the malevolent plan, discreetly warned Yudhisthira, who comprehended the subtle cue.
Despite the danger, Kunti and the Pandavas arrived in Varanavata. Sensing impending danger, they learned about the conspiracy through a messenger dispatched by Vidura. Responding strategically, Bhima excavated a secret tunnel beneath the Jatugriha, devising an escape route. As the house went up in flames as intended, the Pandavas, using the underground passage, emerged unscathed.
The Kauravas, including Duryodhana, assumed that the Pandavas and Kunti had perished in the conflagration. Unbeknownst to them, the Pandavas had outwitted their foes and survived, discreetly biding their time to return and seek justice. This dramatic tale of deceit, survival, and cunning stratagems underscores the complex dynamics within the Mahabharata, showcasing the resourcefulness and resilience of the Pandavas in the face of adversity. Bratya Basu’s adaptation in “Jatugriha” captures the essence of this episode, highlighting the strategic thinking and resilience of the protagonists in the epic narrative.
